Mark Eberhardt Contracting
caters to specialty retailers
John McAdoo and Mark Eberhardt
worked together for eight years before they decided they should strike out
on their own and start a new company. Four years after starting with three
employees, Mark Eberhardt Contracting, Inc. now has nine full-time workers
and its 203 percent growth between 1998 and 2000 place it atop the real
estate / construction / development category of the Business Times’
Pittsburgh 100.
Mr. McAdoo, vice president of
Mark Eberhardt Contracting, expects the Gibsonia-based construction
management company to continue its path of growth and expansion. Sales in
the first year were $500,000 and by the end of 2000 had increased to more
than $3.5 million, according to Mr. McAdoo.
Mr. McAdoo and Mark Eberhardt,
the president, have a long history of working together. “Mark and I have
known each other for 15 years,” he said. “Mark is well versed in the
construction business with a degree in construction management from the
University of Oklahoma.”
Mr. Eberhardt handles the
company’s accounting and cash flow while Mr. McAdoo is in charge of
estimating. The two men complement each other well and share operations,
customer relations and project management duties.
The company, also known by its
abbreviation, MEC, recently moved to a new 4,500-square-feet location in
Gibsonia. Previously, its headquarters was down the street in 800 square
feet of office space on Gibsonia Road.
Mr. McAdoo said MEC strives to
have a reputation as being a responsible construction management company
catering to the needs of the specialty retailer. The company and its
management have extensive experience throughout the United States, building
for such retailers as General Nutrition Cos. Inc., Regis Corp., Stake
Escape, AVCO Financial Services and Fashion Bug. MEC services are available
in 36 states and the District of Columbia.
Mr. Eberhardt said MEC works
toward a simple goal – doing the job right the first time.
“It costs me money if we have to
do a job twice,” said Mr. Eberhardt, adding that doing it right the first
time is a pat phrase, but one used extensively in contracting.
“We push customer service with
our employees because any way you look at it, we’re a service business and
only as good as the last work that we finished.”
“At MEC, we’re continually
looking to add good employees who have the same concern for customer care
and quality that has enabled us to get where we are today,” Mr. McAdoo said.
